In this episode, we’re diving into the world of ITIL v4 certification, exploring its structure and benefits, and how it can help you adapt to the fast-paced and complex environment of today’s business world. We’ll look at the different certification paths available and how they can elevate your IT service management career.
Let’s start by understanding why ITIL v4 was introduced. Owned by AXELOS, ITIL v4 was launched in 2019 to address the evolving demands of the modern business environment. It offers IT departments new methodologies and practices, providing comprehensive guidance for IT management in the current service economy. The shift from ITIL v3 to v4 reflects the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing world.
Studying for the ITIL v4 certification can be done in various ways, including attending classroom courses, participating in live online training, or self-studying through online courses. This flexibility allows professionals to choose a learning path that best suits their schedule and learning preferences.
The ITIL v4 certification path is structured into several levels. It begins with the ITIL Foundation certification, which introduces the core concepts of ITIL practices, guiding principles, and key ideas from Lean, Agile, and DevOps. After completing the Foundation level, you can choose between two paths: the Managing Professional (MP) route or the Strategic Leader (SL) route.
The ITIL Managing Professional certification focuses on running effective IT-enabled services, teams, and workflows. It includes modules like ITIL Specialist Create, Deliver and Support, Drive Stakeholder Value, High Velocity IT, and the common module, ITIL Strategist Direct Plan and Improve.
On the other hand, the ITIL Strategic Leader path emphasises how IT influences and directs business strategy. It includes the ITIL Leader Digital and IT Strategy module alongside the shared ITIL Strategist module.
Achieving the ITIL Master certification requires completing both the MP and SL certifications, along with demonstrating experience and a deep understanding of ITIL principles.
For those transitioning from ITIL v3, there is no direct transition module for ITIL Foundation v4. However, AXELOS has developed an ITIL Managing Professional Transition Module for those who have achieved ITIL Expert status or accumulated enough credits in the v3 scheme.
