Welcome aboard the Knowledge Train. In this podcast we explore insights and tips to help you manage your way to success in your career and business. I’m Simon Buehring, your conductor on this journey to knowledge and I’m thrilled to have you with us today.
Today’s episode is all about a fascinating topic for any current or aspiring project manager: PRINCE2 Agile training courses.
Let’s kick off by addressing something that’s been quite the buzz in the realm of project management. We’re talking about PRINCE2 Agile certifications. AXELOS, a leading authority in best practice methodologies, introduced PRINCE2 Agile to the world in June of 2015. This certification was a direct response to the project management community’s call for an update and an integration of agile tools and practices into the well-established PRINCE2 method.
Now, for those of you wondering ‘What exactly is PRINCE2 Agile?’ – it’s simply the best of both worlds. It’s a project management certification scheme that brings together the robust governance and control features of the PRINCE2 method with the flexibility that Agile is known for.
But why the need for such a hybrid? Well, demand was on the rise for a project management approach that could accommodate the rapidly changing landscape while still offering the predictability and control required for complex projects. PRINCE2 Agile was the answer to that demand.
Some have argued that PRINCE2 project management and Agile practices are like oil and water, they just don’t mix. But actually, they complement each other. While PRINCE2 brings a set of comprehensive controls for governance, PRINCE2 Agile adds the element of flexibility, enabling managers to work more effectively with agile teams without sacrificing the stability PRINCE2 is known for.
As we look at the combination of PRINCE2 with Agile, it becomes clear that understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each is key. PRINCE2’s structured decision-making, governance, and embracing of agile practices make it a solid foundation, while its reputation for being cumbersome is, in fact, undeserved. Agile, on the other hand, shines with its ability to deliver early and adapt to change, yet it does not provide the overarching business justification nor the project management structure that PRINCE2 does. This synergy is what PRINCE2 Agile capitalises on—enhancing the value of both methodologies.
Not to mention, PRINCE2 Agile certifications are rising stars amongst project management certifications. With PRINCE2’s strong foothold in the UK and EU, it’s no surprise that PRINCE2 Agile exams are increasingly sought after.
This certification isn’t here to push PRINCE2 out of the picture; far from it. It’s designed to complement the PRINCE2 method, catering to both the newcomers to project management and the veterans with ample PRINCE2 experience alike.
Despite various attempts to introduce new project management methods over time, PRINCE2 remains a steadfast choice for organisations, both public and private—especially in areas where Agile hasn’t fully made its mark yet.
Interested in getting certified? There are two levels of PRINCE2 Agile certification to consider: the Foundation and the Practitioner. The Foundation level is your starting point, introducing you to how PRINCE2’s management controls can be tailored for agile projects. The Practitioner level, however, is where the practical application comes into play, teaching you how to meld PRINCE2’s structure and governance with Agile’s methods and techniques.
For those seeking to become certified at the Foundation level, no prerequisites are needed. The course focuses on delivering agile projects by tailoring PRINCE2 management controls. It’s ideal for agile team members, traditional project managers, and staff responsible for product delivery.
As for the Practitioner level, it aims at those already familiar with PRINCE2 who wish to extend their skills to manage agile projects effectively. This includes a range of professional staff from senior managers to those in project support roles. However, prerequisites for this level include a number of certifications, from PRINCE2 Foundation to PMP and CAPM.
And let’s not forget the benefits—both individuals and organisations stand to gain considerably from adopting PRINCE2 Agile. Individuals can expect to enhance their employability and gain recognition for their ability to apply PRINCE2 in agile contexts. Organisations, on the other hand, can look forward to improved project management and product delivery, increased stakeholder confidence, and a methodology that scales to their project needs.
If you’re looking to dive into the details of these courses, they come as either a virtual classroom or traditional classroom format, with comprehensive training materials, official handbooks, sample exams, and, of course, the all-important certification exams. For Foundation, the emphasis is on gaining a basic understanding of agile within the PRINCE2 framework, while the Practitioner course goes deeper into practical application with topics like Cynefin, Lean Startup, and Scrum.
