Welcome aboard the Knowledge Train. In this podcast, we explore insights and tips to help you manage your way to success in your career and business. I’m Simon Buehring, your conductor on this journey to knowledge, and I’m thrilled to have you with us today.

Today, we’re diving into the world of project management and shining a spotlight on a methodology that has become a global standard. In this episode, we’ll be unravelling the mysteries behind PRINCE2.

Let’s start with the basics. PRINCE2, which stands for “PRojects IN Controlled Environments,” is not just a mouthful. It’s the most popular project management methodology globally and is considered the default standard for project management in the UK public sector and even the United Nations.

Now, why is PRINCE2 so widely adopted? Well, it’s especially popular in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and it’s used by a diverse range of organisations, both public and private, to deliver better outcomes from their projects.

To give you a bit of history, PRINCE2 evolved from an earlier project management method called PROMPT II. In 1989, the UK government’s Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency adopted a version of PROMPT II to manage government IT projects. Initially named ‘PRINCE’ (PROMPT IN the CCTA Environment), it later transformed into ‘PRojects IN Controlled Environments.’

The methodology continued to evolve, and in 1996, the 2nd version was released – PRINCE2 – a generic project management approach suitable for any type of project. Interesting fact: PRINCE2 was owned by the UK government until 2013 when it was sold to AXELOS.

Fast forward to the present, and in September 2023, PRINCE2 unveiled its latest edition, the 7th edition. This version introduces a crucial element missing from earlier ones – a focus on people. It also includes additional guidance on commercial management, sustainability management, and digital and data management.

Now, who certifies individuals in PRINCE2? Well, that’s where PeopleCert comes in. They are the awarding body for PRINCE2, providing examinations and certifications in various global best practice methodologies, including PRINCE2, ITIL, MSP, Scrum, and more.

Moving on to the nitty-gritty of PRINCE2 – the methodology itself. PRINCE2 offers a process-based approach with principles, practices, and processes guiding projects from start to finish. It even includes a crucial people aspect of project management.

In September 2023, the latest edition of the PRINCE2 manual – “Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2” – was released. This manual is your comprehensive guide to applying the PRINCE2 methodology and forms the basis for PRINCE2 examinations.

Now, let’s talk principles. PRINCE2 has seven principles that act as guiding obligations, ensuring effective application and tailoring of PRINCE2 to any project. From ensuring continued business justification to tailoring to suit the project – these principles are the bedrock of PRINCE2.

Since the release of PRINCE2 7th edition in 2023, people have become central to PRINCE2. Understanding the needs, skills, motivations, and interrelationships of individuals involved in the project is vital to its success.

The methodology also outlines seven essential practices, covering elements like the business case, organisation, plans, quality, risk, issues, and progress. These practices ensure consistent application throughout the project.

The seven PRINCE2 processes cover the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to closure. Each process provides a list of suggested activities and responsibilities, ensuring the project stays on track.

Another critical element is the project context, referring to the unique environment both within and outside the business organisation funding the project. Tailoring PRINCE2 to fit this context is crucial for success.

In addition to these elements, PRINCE2 defines seven project management team roles, each with associated responsibilities. From project executives to project support roles, these roles ensure the smooth functioning of the project.

PRINCE2 also recommends a set of management products – templates to help plan, manage, and control a project. These can be adapted to fit any project and organisational process.

Now, for effective PRINCE2-based project management, it’s not just about introducing the method; it’s about embedding it into the organisational culture. “Embedding PRINCE2” means consistently implementing a customised project management method across all projects.

If you’re curious about how organisations have integrated PRINCE2, exploring case studies can provide valuable insights into real-world applications, and you can find some on our website.

Now, let’s talk certification. PRINCE2 is the world’s most popular project management certification, offering two levels: Foundation and Practitioner. The Foundation level equips you to work effectively in a PRINCE2 environment, while the Practitioner level trains you to apply the method to real projects.

There’s also PRINCE2 Agile, a variant of the core PRINCE2 method tailored for agile project environments. It has two certification levels: PRINCE2 Agile Foundation and PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner.

Both Foundation and Practitioner certifications have their exams, usually included in accredited training programs. And speaking of training, most individuals seeking certification enrol in accredited PRINCE2 training courses offered by PRINCE2 Accredited Training Organisations (ATO).

PRINCE2 offers numerous benefits for both organisations and individuals. It provides a repeatable, documented process for better decision-making over investment decisions, giving organisations a competitive advantage.
