In this episode, we’re dissecting the well-oiled machine of project management—the PRINCE2 methodology. Whether you’re a project manager or someone interested in the intricate mechanics behind successful project delivery, today’s topic will provide you with a detailed roadmap to project excellence.
Project management has evolved into a sophisticated discipline and at the front of this evolution is a methodology that has gained global recognition for steering projects to success. Today, I want to unveil the essence of PRINCE2, a methodology that helps organisations to hit their targets and achieve tangible benefits. So let’s get to the heart of PRINCE2 and discover why it’s become a cornerstone in the world of project management.
The PRINCE2 methodology stands as a titan in the realm of project management. Now, in its 7th edition, it’s the most widely adopted method out there. It offers a structure that’s process-driven, ensuring that projects not only reach completion but do so while delivering valuable outcomes and a return on investment. It’s not just about checking off tasks; it’s about creating value every step of the way.
When we talk about a ‘methodology’, we’re referring to a systematic approach shaped by rules and practices for achieving excellence in a specific field. PRINCE2 is more than a guide—it’s a comprehensive roadmap for orchestrating projects from inception to final review. It’s built on principles, strengthened by the involvement of people, sharpened through clear practices, and pushed forward by robust processes—all within the context of the project at hand.
At the core of the PRINCE2 methodology are seven iron-clad principles. They are the bedrock, confirming whether a project is truly managed by PRINCE2 standards. They act as a test of authenticity and a benchmark for best practices. These principles dictate that every project must have a continued business justification, incorporate lessons learned, define and respect roles and responsibilities, manage by stages and exception, maintain a product focus, and must always be tailored to the project’s environment.
Projects are fundamentally about people. Recognising the influence of participants and stakeholders is paramount. PRINCE2 delves into the dynamics of the project management team, highlighting the need for alignment and the importance of getting ‘buy-in’ from those affected by the project’s outcomes. After all, without people’s support, even the most meticulously planned projects can falter.
The practices within PRINCE2 are areas of project management that are considered throughout the lifecycle of a project. Much like categories in the well-known PMBOK Guide, PRINCE2 envelops time, cost, risk, quality, and scope, among others. These practices form a decision-making matrix, ensuring the project’s feasibility every step of the way.
Processes in PRINCE2 outline the decisions that need to be made, who should make them, and when they should happen throughout the project. These processes ensure the project moves along in a structured manner, allowing for sequential and informed investment decisions.
One size doesn’t fit all in project management. PRINCE2 embraces this by insisting on ‘tailoring’—the method must be sensibly adapted for each project’s unique context, influenced by factors like organisational culture. While practices and processes are adaptable, the principles are not; they are sacrosanct.
The PRINCE2 method provides structure to team roles yet allows for flexibility. This ensures that responsibility is clear, from the project board right down to individual team managers and allows for adaptation according to the project’s scale and complexity.
PRINCE2 is like a chameleon, blending into the environment of any project across sectors. For agile methodologies, there’s PRINCE2 Agile—a flexibility the modern project environment often demands.
PRINCE2 is about guiding organisations to make the most of their investments. It poses critical questions at every turn, ensuring clarity on objectives, means of achievement, and the delineation of responsibilities, thus elevating the chances of project success.
As we’ve journeyed through the PRINCE2 methodology, it’s clear that its legacy as a trusted method for over a quarter of a century is well-deserved. Continuously adapting to the changing project management landscape, PRINCE2’s principle of tailoring is its ace, making it fit for any project size or type. It’s a methodology that when applied with the context in mind, can amplify project outcomes and enhance the return on investment. For those intrigued to dig deeper, consider a PRINCE2 course to truly master the method.
